chapter 9 response.

1. When Simon is in his special place the flies only buzz around the pigs head. They have no interest in using Simon for food.
2. While Simon is growing weaker by the minute he decides to go see what the thing on the hill really was.
3. When Simon reaches the mountain side he learns that the figure that Ralph, Jack and Roger found in a previous chapter is actually a dead aviator. His parachute was stuck in a tree. When the wind blew it raised and lowered his head, giving the illusion that he was alive. Once Simon figured it out then he called it a joke and destroyed the mess of parachute that made the aviator move.
4. Piggy suggests to Ralph that they go to Jacks feast.
5. They are treated as guests; however others purposely burn Piggy with meat and make it a laughing matter.
6. Jack tells Ralph that the conch has no meaning anymore, and basically that he has no more power.
7. As the party ends the weather changes to a mini tropical storm. Rain, thunder and lightning fill the sky.
8. As the boys dance around in a circle they chant, “Kill the beast, cut his throat, spill his blood”.
9. Near the end of their dance, Simon emerges from the darkness and stumbles in to the middle of the circle. He barely has any life in him so he mutters what he had found out. The tries to tell them that the beast is not real and not sitting up on the hill. However the boys ignore him and kill him, mistaking him for the beast. Therefore making sense of the beastie’s prediction.
10. Simon wasn’t killed by a single person, he was killed by a group of boys that lost them self to savagery. If a finger had to have been pointed it would be at jack because he encouraged a savage life style.
Jack started the circle that lead to the death of Simon. When the storm picked up little ones became scared and started running around. Jack showed them how the circle dance worked and eventually people started joining in. Ralph and Piggy ended up in the circle. Eventually the group got caught up in the moment and didn’t think twice about their actions. This lead to the death of Simon.
To me this easily shows that the group and their leader Jack is responsible for Simons death. Jack started the madness and then everyone fell to its power and lost all self control. They were so lost in the moment they couldn’t make good decisions.
Jack and his hunters went hunting. They didn’t decide to kill a regular pig that would be quick and easy to kill. No, they chose a mother corpulent pig who would give more resistance. They wounded it and chased it. Eventually caught up to it and killed it. Then Jack cut off its head and created the Lord of the Flies. It was the Lord of the Flies that foretold of his killing and ensured it.
With further look into this chapter it becomes more Jacks fault for Simon’s death. He created the beastie. He made it possible for the Lord of the Flies to speak with Simon. It was the Lord of the Flies who spilled information, not just verbally but visually. He said that everyone would kill him, and that’s exactly what happened. After their talk Simon fell into the darkness of the pig’s mouth and passed out. This wasn’t just darkness because phosphorescence wouldn’t dare shine there, it was truly evil.
Over all Jack was the 1st bump in the chain of events that lead to Simon’s death. It’s strange really; Simon was the one who had an alternate idea of the beastie. He thought it was the evil side of all of them. It’s almost as if Jack wanted him dead because he would have only one main idea of the beastie that everyone would share, that it is an evil horrible monster.
