Lord of the Flies
Chapter 8-Gift from the darkness
Perspective: Mauro
This chapter had a lot of plot changing events; however I am going to focus on one. To me the event that had the most plot changing power was when Jack left the group to start his own. In this event a few different things happened. In a quick summery, Jack failed to take leadership, Ralph's group lost hunters, and piggy became more respected.
It’s almost obvious that from the beginning of the book Jack wanted to lead the group. When he didn't win the election a part of his brain became dedicated to taking leadership. After that he tried to make Ralph look bad and turn the group against him. In this chapter I think it showed the most. He tried to blow the conch and form a meeting. Once every one was there she spoke of the encounter with the beastie, however he was not truthful. He claimed that Ralph was a coward and stayed back as the crept towards the beast. Ralph tried to tell everyone that Jack was lying and that he was the one that stayed back. Jack tried to take leader ship from Ralph, but failed. He couldn’t stand living any more under Ralph so he announced that he would be starting his own clan. At first no one joined him, but later after the meeting ended people started disappearing. They were leaving to Jack. When this happened Jacks hunter’s left, leaving Ralph. Ralph became faced with the problem of how they could get their meat. Jacks method of killing a pig worked with a lot of people. Surround the pig and attack it. Ralph didn’t really have enough people to pull that off.
After Jack left the group Piggy offered the idea of moving the fire to the beach. This idea was driven by the fear of the beastie. After seeing the big shadow on the mountain and mistaking it for a beastie they no longer wanted to walk up a hill and stay there over night. Piggy’s idea was accepted with open arms. When Jack was in the group he was always putting Piggy down and making a fool out of him. Now that Jack was no longer in the picture people actually got to hear Piggy out and accept him as an intelligent person. It didn’t say it but Ralph felt happy for Piggy. He saw the ideas that Piggy made as useful things that would help everybody. He also felt bad that the name Piggy stuck to him even after he told him not to mention it, so he was happy to see that he got some respect.
Piggy and Ralph decided to try to stay away from the beastie by moving the fire to the beach. Jack and his Hunters made a ritual to help them stay safe from the beastie. They began to leave a part of their kill for the beastie on a stick. In this chapter it was a pig’s head on a stick. By doing this they felt that the beast will have no reason to come after them because it was getting meat anyway and wasn’t lacking food. This is showing how savage Jack really is and how he is changing. In the beginning of the book he would never even consider decapitating a pig, matter a fact he couldn’t kill a little piglet.
This chapter held an event that will change the plot of this book, however it hasn’t yet. Simon was there when they killed the pig and he witnessed the decapitation of the pig. After the hunters cleared out Simon started to observe the pig. It was slightly grinning, and it started talking to him. Simon never really responded to the pig’s head that called its self the Lord of the Fly’s but told him a lot. It said to run away and go play with the others. Then after Simon failed to run away and gave no indication of moving the pig’s head said that Simon shouldn’t have run away just because he would find him elsewhere. In the end Simon fell in to the black hole of the pig’s mouth and lost consciousness.
